Ryppl was originally started by members of the Boost project who realized that it was all becoming too coupled, unwieldy, and dependent on bespoke infrastructure. After several years(!) of discussing Boost-focused solutions, though, Troy Straszheim realized that if any effort was going to succeed, it had to be bigger than just Boost. He envisioned a system like CPAN or PyPI that lowered the barrier of entry for everyone, yet was based on Git repositories so that the transition from “sandbox project” to full Boost citizen would be seamless. Now it looked like what we were making could be useful to lots of other projects.
